In today's environment it seems like most organizations are primarily interested in using a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure as a desktop replacement for those users who only need the most basic of functionality.  However, when I was tasked to tackle our product compatibility issues I quickly identified a new way to utilize this technology.

In my current employer's environment we use a large number of engineering applications. At the time of writing this article we've been able to use the tools at our disposal to identify over 200 applications that are reported to be actively used by our Global Practices for projects. For those of you who've ever worked with engineering applications know that they can be some of the most trying programs to work with. Compatibility issues abound when attempting to use similar engineering applications to compare figures. In the past we've used a number of tools to fix these conflicts, Citrix and Symantec SWV being two key successes. However, many of these applications require specific configuration changes to be made to a workstation for that application to function properly and they couldn't get us past all of our technical barriers.
